Commodore's Log 

         
         I hope everyone can get out on the water with one or more of the Fall cruises now
    that the weather is turning cooler. The Labor Day cruise to Belhaven was a great
    success due to the efforts of cruise captains, Rob and Sharon McDonald. At least
    10 boats made the trip with more attendees opting for the land route. Ken at the
    Belhaven Marina was a great host allowing arranging music one night, allowing
    the use of the common area for our cookout and letting those anchored out to
    use the marina dinghy dock. Check the NSA website for information on the two
    remaining cruises, a regatta and the Commodores Ball.
          All of these events cannot happen without NSA members stepping up and
    volunteering, either as a Cruise Captain or Vice Commodore or, even,
    Commodore. We’ll be looking to fill these positions in the coming months, so start
    considering which positions you could lead next year to continue to make NSA
    the great organization it is.
         Send your desire to be Commodore or a Vice Commodore to me and Cruise Captain positions to Rich Mason and we will put
    you on the list.

    Keep spreading the word about the NSA. We are having more people out and about on the docks as the summer temps become more reasonable. It will be prime fall sailing season before you know it!

    Cruising Log 

         It is that time again - the leaves are starting to pile up on the boats in the yard. In this case, it is most likely due to extreme heat rather than the beginning of fall but if you squint just right into the sun, we can imagine that the cooler days, and of course cruises, of autumn are nearly here.

        Last week’s cruise to Belhaven was a smashing success. Belhaven Marina and the operators of motorboat Mischief delivered an exceptional event bookended by exceptional sailing conditions for those of us propelled by the white stuff. Turnout was strong with a great mix of the usual suspects, a number of new members, and several newly returned members from the NSA’s not too distant past. We were especially delighted by the return of Chuck and Sharon to the water after a bit of a hiatus. Thanks everyone for making it out and for making Liz’s birthday so awesome!

         If my calendar is correct, we have two remaining cruises. The first is a quick jaunt out to West Bay the weekend of September 26/27 and the last is back out to Ocracoke for the Halloween weekend and the annual Pirate Fest! More details and, most importantly, online registration for both trips can be found on the NSA website. We hope to see as many of you as possible and close out the season with mighty NSA fleets at both events.

        In order to share Cruise Pictures and Events with everyone in NSA please make a new Album or add pics to an existing Album for the Cruises or Events on Facebook.     
                                  (When you post to your private page not everyone in NSA can see them)

    How to:

    • Go to the NSA Facebook page
    • Click on Media (see pic below)

    • Then Click on Albums
    • If the Cruise Album exists, then click on it, then click on the ADD Photos or Videos button
          • If not, click on +Create Album

       (or ask the VC of Communications to make a Facebook Album for you)

         Anyone that took pictures during the Labor Day Cruise please add them in the Labor Day Cruise, 2026 photo album on our Facebook group. Our Facebook group continues to be private for our paid members so please remember to answer the questions when requesting to join.

         We still have the new tee shirt design so order yours while they last and before the fall cruise! You can order on our website under Marketplace. Christa will be sure you receive your order.      Nautical Lore and More

    As the Crow flies

         If you travel 'as the crow flies' then you travel in a straight line, avoiding any obstacles. One theory for the origin of this phrase is that Vikings released land-loving crows or ravens from a ship to help find a route to the nearest shore. Legend has it that this is also why the lookout point at the top of a ship was called the ‘crow’s nest’, named after the place where Viking sailors kept their crows or ravens in a cage.
