'The Neuse Juice'

Volume 53 Number 3

Commodore's Lo

Cruising weather has arrived! It’s here just in time for the Oriental Boat Show and the year’s NSA cruises to follow!

If you are in town for the boat show occurring on April 10-12, stop by the Nautical Cooperative of Oriental and say hello to the NSA members who will be answering attendees questions about what we do, along with representatives from SCO and ODC.

Also, be sure to stop by the Rotary Club’s nautical flea market and make them an offer on some of the huge inventory they always have on hand. All proceeds go to charities within Pamlico County.

While the temperatures were not exactly springlike, the sun was out, the shrimp and side dishes were great and the attendance was huge at the NSA Shrimperoo last month.  It was fun to catch up with so many NSA'ers and meet new members as well.

I’m still land bound for a few (or several) more weeks, but I hope to see many of you again on one or more of the upcoming year’s cruises sooner rather than later.   Check out the cruise schedule and start adding them to your calendar. Until then cruises start, enjoy the awesome day sailing weather that will be here to stay by the weekend.

    Special Events Lo

Saturday March 28th started wet and dreary after a cold front passed over Oriental, dropping temperatures by 45 degrees from Friday's balmy summer like weather.  By early afternoon the temperature had risen at least into the low 60's and the sun was shining as our team of wonderful volunteers started to arrive.

Tables and chairs were cleaned of the "yellow peril," and serving tables and a "kitchen" were set-up. Aluminum foil shields surrounded the Sterno heaters, and barricades were constructed around the propane stoves to protect them from the wind. By 1pm the "chefs" had water boiling and would soon start cooking the first batch of shrimp. A big SHOUT-OUT to Dave Sargent (M and Ms) for supplying the shrimp at cost.

The registration desks were ready and soon long lines formed as members collected wristbands and drink tickets, and guests paid their way in. Our musician Christopher Siren set up and provided background music (which had people dancing later in the day). A wonderful array of side-dishes and desserts provided by our members soon filled the serving table on the deck (you're wonderful!)

While Tiki Bob was busy supplying drinks, a line for shrimp started to form and our servers ensured everyone received a fair share. Once we were confident that we had more than enough shrimp we opened up for "seconds and thirds," as our 100lb supply of shrimp was rapidly consumed.

The 50/50 raffle raised $400, all of which the club and the winner donated to Pamlico Firestation #19. Fire Chief Eric Kindle arrived in time to be presented with a check.

The weather may not have been the best but everyone enjoyed themselves.
Finally a big thanks to Rot
ary for the tables and tents and to the Oriental Inn and Marrina for the membership office and discounted beer and wine for the club.

    Cruising Lo

Its true. Its happening. We survived a hard Southern winter and now we have the first cruise of the season just ahead of us!

Time to check your coolant, oil, and transmission fluid levels, tap the fuel gauge to make sure its reading right, exercise the windlass, eyeball all the seacocks, confirm the fridge still chills your favorite beverage to optimal temps, pat/scratch yourself on the back with your boat hook, and register for the Spring Cruise to Southwest Creek on the NSA website!

Cara and Jason Keys have put together a great shakedown opportunity for the NSA for April 25-26.  If you haven’t made this trip before, this is the perfect opportunity to experience one of the Neuse’s best kept secrets,  just a tack or two across the river.  At my age I’ve been to a few nice bonfires but nothing compares to the view out across the creek and marsh from the sandy nook we have at our disposal in the anchorage on this trip.

If any new cruisers (or older ones as well!) has any questions or concerns about the trip, please reach out to Jason and Cara or myself and we will make sure you are as prepared as possible.

Please remember that the NSA has a new policy in effect this year where cruisers bring their own beverages so make sure to come prepared.

I heard a rumor that the Air Show cruise captains/co-captains are hard at work finalizing their plans for the inaugural happening of this cruise May 9-10. Very excited to see what the salty cabal of seasoned cruisers of Bruce, Kay, Werner, and Calley have in store for all of us!

The Final Stitch: When a sailor died at sea, they were often sewn into their hammocks for burial. Tradition dictated that the last stitch should be made through the dead man’s nose to ensure he was truly dead and not just in a coma.
