Commodore's Log Your commodore has finally rejoined the fleet! It feels so good to be back on the water. Three Quarter Time has logged two day sails and the cruise to Ocracoke with cruise captains Tracy and Robert along with a large number of fellow cruisers. The music at Ocrafolk was outstanding, in addition to great camaraderie with the group. One of the bands which was featured three times at Ocrafolk will be in Oriental on Father’s Day. I highly recommend going to hear the Jeff Little Trio when they play at The Old Theater on the 21st if you haven’t seen them before. Be sure to check out the schedule of events coming in July which are listed on the NSA web page. The Cape Lookout cruise over the July 4th weekend will let us watch fireworks either from your boat or on the beach on the Atlantic side of the hook featuring displays in Harkers Island, Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle and Swansboro. The July cruise has a week-long option going offshore to Wrightsville Beach. Details for this option should be available on the website by the time you are reading this month’s Neuse Juice and will likely be mentioned in the Vice Commodore of Cruising section below. Come out and support NCO’s (Nautical Collective of Oriental) fund raising event later in July when they stage the Dinghy Poker Run. Proceeds from the event are used to sponsor kids from Pamlico County in swimming and sailing lessons who would otherwise not be able to afford the opportunity. The Collective is composed of members from all three boating clubs (NSA, SCOO and ODC) who are trying to help local kids enjoy the water as much as we do. Don’t want to scoot around collecting cards in your dinghy? Plenty of volunteer opportunities are available as well and volunteers are certainly needed.Contact NSA members Chuck Gordon to volunteer (919-880-7879(cell/text); chuckgordon55@yahoo.com email). Rick Edwards Membership Log We enjoyed seeing so many newer members on the Ocrafolk cruise last week. We look forward to welcoming new faces and boats throughout the season. Please join me in welcoming three members who have joined our ranks since last month!

Cruising Log Hope everyone is doing well. We are deep into the cruising season and our events to date have been well-attended and well-executed (go cruise captains go!). We’ve had two new cruises for the NSA this year so far, the Cherry Point Air Show and the Ocrafolk Festival this past weekend (not a new location but certainly a new reason to visit) and we were delighted to have new members on each. Our next cruise is going to be a treat. It isn’t every year that the 4th of July comes on a weekend. This gave the Bridge an opportunity to compare notes on favorite 4th of July trips in the area in the past. Rick sold on us on a return to Cape Lookout based a previous 4th outing he passed there. If the weather cooperates we should have excellent long distance views of fireworks from surrounding towns with the added bonus of zero burn risk from falling debris (we were in the fallout zone in New Bern last year). Immediately post Independence festivities, we will seize our best weather/wind opportunity to launch the week long and point our bows towards the open water for an overnight offshore jump to Wrightsville via the Masonboro inlet. We hope as many of y’all that can will venture south with the club for this year’s week long cruise. Thanks again to everyone that has made our cruises such a positive experience of adventure and camaraderie. We look forward to seeing some of you on Cape Lookout and beyond in July! We will be hauling Jane after the week long for a frantic race to re-rig and get her back in the water for Pirate Fest on Ocracoke. Speaking of which, whilst it is still a few months off, I would encourage anyone planning on coming to Pirate Fest with the club in late October to start assembling their pirate garb soon and practicing their best Arrrrrrrr’s! Before another stirring re-enactment of Blackbeard's demise, we will have two more events - the Labor Day cruise to Washington/Bath led by Rob and Sharon McDonald (Sept. 5-7) and a jaunt to South River or West Bay for the Fall Cruise with Dave and Christa Kreutz (Sept. 26-27). So much great NSA cruising ahead! Rich Mason

A smoking lamp was kept in a designated safe area aboard ship, away from tarred timbers. Sailors could light their pipes from it, but when the lamp was extinguished, smoking was strictly forbidden.
